On June 7th, 2010 (Monday), Research Center for Information Technology Innovation (CITI) in Academia Sinica, Art and Architecture Thesaurus Team of Taiwan e-Learning and Digital Archives Program(TELDAP), and Standards SIG of Museum Computer Network Taiwan Chapter (MCN-Taiwan) are planning to host an academic lecture – Digital Libraries and the Semantic Web: Illuminating Chaos, Using Semantics to Harness the Web – in Academia Sinica Institute of Information Science (IIS). In the lecture, we will have with us Dagobert Soergel, professor of Library and Information Studies in Graduate School of Education (GSE) in the State University of New York at Buffalo, who will introduce the basic concept of digital libraries and semantic web as well as some related issues. Topics include:
- Overview of issues
- Semantics for whom and for what
- Representation to assist with query formulation
- Representation for comprehension
- Systems of representation
- Support for finding: Indexing
- Building KOS
- How can it all get done
- Zeroing in on the conceptual foundation
The Web is a chaotic place, even more so with the appearance of Wikis, blogs, and social tagging "in the wild". This talk aims at providing a vision of the many ways classification can help.
The first part will illustrate through a number of examples how classification - construed broadly as any approach to creating meaningful structure - can help with putting the vast amount of information on the Web to better use. People need meaningful classification to help them formulate queries, computer systems need either controlled vocabulary indexing (produced by people or automatically) or a semantic structure for mapping a semantic query into a free-text (Google) query for better retrieval. The huge amount of labor that goes into social tagging can be applied more effectively through gentle guidance, and the user-generated tags can be organized into a structure for easier search. Both people and computer systems need semantics to make sense of information once it is found.
The second part will address the chaos of the many partially overlapping ontologies and other Knowledge Organization Systems that run wild on the Web. It will introduce the conceptual hub approach to KOS mapping that also provides the basis for universal facet-based search of the Web.
We welcome the researchers in the fields of museums, libraries, archives and information science as well as professionals, and also those who are interested in digital libraries/museums to register and join us!
Registration:
Please fill in the application form, online. The deadline is May 31st, and the registration procedure ends when reaching the limitation: 80 people. We will send notification through e-mail by June 1st to those who register successfully.
Note:
1. This activity will give two hours certification of civil servants life-long learning.
2. For the sake of the environment, this activity will not provide paper cups. Please have your own cups with you.
3. 3. The lecture will proceed in English.

Introduction of AAT Taiwan
AAT-Taiwan is initiated by Taiwan e-Learning and Digital Archives Program, cooperating with Getty Research Institute to establish a Chinese-language Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT). AAT, which contains semantic-related vocabularies, can be used to describe art, architecture, installations, material culture, and materials. AAT can also be used as the basis of cataloging and documentation works to help information retrieval of art, architecture, and material culture. In addition, because it contains plentiful knowledge context and complete information structure, AAT can be used as a tool of academic research. Related links: http://aattaiwan.teldap.tw/
Instroduction of MCN Taiwan Standards SIG
The Standards SIG mainly aims at the wider community of cultural heritage (such as museums, libraries, and archives) and exchanges theoretical and practical ideas regarding digitization and the standards arising thereof, as well as the interchange possibilities of various standards, in order to facilitate the formation and sharing of common standards.
